This is the Qualifying Group #1. You are voting for the "best" monster in this group-- you decide what "best" means. This poll will stay open for 48 hours (note that this is different from the original proposal). The top vote-getter will move on to the 16-monster, single elimination tournament. Click here for the official rules post.
Remember: Posting from puppet accounts is prohibited. People who vote using puppet accounts will not have their votes counted (from any account).
Advocating your favorite monster in this thread is encouraged. Feel free to berate the ones you don't want, and tout the ones you do.
There can be only one.
The candidates in this group are:
Kobold
Goblin
Ghast
Yeti

This is tough for me because Kobold and Goblin were two of my top choices as classic, versatile monsters and I think they both deserve to move on to the tourney. The ghast is also my favorite undead. This is a skunking hard decision.
Except for the Yeti. Yeti's suck. Bigfoot does not deserve a spot in the tourney. |

Kobolds (or in the Jones households, kuh-bolds), hands down.
As a random, unleveled monster, they're everyone's whupping boy. When they're prepared or when in their warrens...watch out. No player likes to admit they got trounced by kobolds, but their ability to use traps and ambushes is rather scary.
Want to scare the tar out of the PC's? Give 'em levels...no one expects it. I threw a few kobold monks against the PC's and even gave them hints (wearing robes....running faser than normal), but they missed it...up until the first one managed to get a Stunning Fist off against the cleric. PC Panic ensued.
We got ambushed by kobolds...two of 'em climbed up on the wagon next to the mage and he laughed them off (and shot a spell at somthing else) until they raged and charged. oops...they had a few levels of barbarian.
Yeti? I'll make soft, furry boots out of it. Ghast? Bring a cleric. Goblin? Nature's cannon fodder. Kobolds are the true terrors of this round. _________________ Portland, Oregon is essentially a Lord of the Flies scenario with white people in the Pacific Northwest instead of children in the South Pacific. In both cases, we have a situation whereby a homogeneous group of people is left alone in an area with no one to keep them in check. Eventually the euphoria and self-congratulation devolves into savagery and murder.

I'm throwing my vote to the kobold. There are few other monsters that effectively scale along with the players the way that kobolds can. Sure, you can have a great time scything through droves of them around 5th, but then your 15th level and that kobold sorcerer just fried your Rogue and went invisible for the third time this encounter.
That, and I got to kill a Planetar with a Kobold sorcerer - I can't think of many cooler things than that. _________________ "I like talking to my son, I like drawing him pictures, and I'm pretty sure I'll like taking him to the park or swimming." Bonefish |

Kobolds can eat your babies. How cool is that? _________________ Brother Justice: C'mon people, that's like dousing a monk with gasoline and then putting a book of matches on a string in front of them. |

I can see no better reason to vote Kobold - except for the name of my kobold sorcerer of pure evil "Spleefy McBlunt". _________________ "I like talking to my son, I like drawing him pictures, and I'm pretty sure I'll like taking him to the park or swimming." Bonefish |

Gotta go with the ghast. Kobolds and goblins have just never been used effectively against or by me... _________________ Shut up and go get your Glorious Leader a beer! |

Don't make Spleefy mad. Spleefy will use telekinesis on you. _________________ "I like talking to my son, I like drawing him pictures, and I'm pretty sure I'll like taking him to the park or swimming." Bonefish |

Twenty years ago, no one expected. Now, it's becoming almost an overdone meme. I've been doing things with kobolds since that Dragon article came out (late 80s?) about humanoid characters. I think it was called "Hey, wanna play a kobold?" I bet the majority of dungeons published in the last 10 years that have kobolds have some that are seriously bumped up. It's as common as the many ninja/one ninja rule.
But my thoughts are generally the same as Brasky's. Kobolds and goblins are the most versatile little buggers. Ghasts are ok too. In the end, I gotta go with kobold but it sucks to have goblins go out so early. _________________ <- And you think you feel bloated and gassy |

I suppose because it's a D&D monster tourney, yeti are probably a bit disadvantaged. But sasquatch were kind of cool in shadowrun...kind of. _________________ how I get here? |

I took the UFC approach. If a kobold, goblin, ghast, and a yeti where in a cage match who would win? I put my money and vote on the ghast.

That's one way to think of it. But goblins and kobolds are more variable in ability that the other two so it depends which specimen winds up in the match. The odds are that the little guys would lose but a 10th level cleric who can command undead would do well. _________________ <- And you think you feel bloated and gassy |

And that's just the thing about this--there are many ways you can decide to cast your vote. You just have to pick the "best." For some people, that's going to mean the strongest. For others, it's the coolest, or simply their favorite for whatever reason. Kobolds and goblins seem to be getting the love for the usefulness and flexibility from a gameplay perspective. All of these are valid reasons to vote.
For me, my choice was as a DM--which of these creatures do I most like pitting against my players. _________________ When you're in your little room, and you're working on something good... but if it's really good, you're gonna need a bigger room. Only one of the contestants on this list has a common-usage word based on it: Ghast! That makes it the winner in my book. Any other choice would be a ghastly mistake! _________________ "Elsewhere, CBS said it had rejected an ad for a gay dating site for the 2010 Super Bowl, but that it would still air three hours of men in tight pants slapping each other on the ass." - Andy Borowitz

BREE-YARK!
I have to go with goblin. Versatile. They're numerous, so you can always sic more on players. They're stupid, so you can play up a humorous aspect as done in Pathfinder (or as the Magic multiverse). However, they're creepy enough that you can play them as scary bugaboos, like Ravenloft or a creepy Celtic campaign.
Ghasts come in a very close second. |

I voted for kobolds as I've always liked them. But I don't disagree with anything you wrote.
With both kobolds and goblins, you can throw large numbers into the fray so they can use group tactics and mob the players but they're weak enough that the players still have a decent chance. The little guys can also use small spaces and low ceilings to their advantage. _________________ <- And you think you feel bloated and gassy |
