Didn't take pictures for a detailed round by round account of the latest Heroscape game with my kids, but I got some good shots of the map:

The kids insisted on having a volcano, which I could have done without. But I really liked the snowy path leading up to the mountain right next to the castle wall. And there's a crapload of road. A crapload!

My boys made an alliance (again) not to attack each other until I was dead-- they were defending the castle against me. When they thought I was sufficiently dead (I still had three ninjas left) they turned on each other. They battled it out between each other as my ninjas snuck around the river and climbed the ladder. By the time my (now) two ninjas got to the top of the castle, only my younger son was left with a couple of weak squads. My ninjas picked them off and I was victorious. The only thing that could have made it sweeter was if I won with pirate characters-- but alas, Heroscape doesn't have any pirates.

I will be hard pressed, once I have disposable income, to not buy heroscape pirates.

Really, I want a game tied to the imaginext line of figs. That's quality gaming right there.

My kids have the imaginext pirates set (as well as the dinosaur/caveman set) and it totally kicks ass.

Honestly, though, if you want to get into Heroscape- just buy the master set. It comes with the full map pieces and a ton of squads and heroes. It costs about $40 at walmart, but it's more than you'll need. If I never bought any of the additional squads and heroes, and could only play with the master set, I would still be very happy. And the nice thing is, when you have ten bucks sitting around every month or so you can go pick up two sets of dudes you don't have.

And don't shop for it at gaming stores-- the mark up is horrible. Definitely buy it at ToysRUs or Walmart.

The rules are easy enough that it's a snap to make hero/unit cards for any figures you have that are even roughly in scale. My son and I have brought pirate figures, Warmachine figures, AT-43 figures, Scooby Doo toys, and a carniverous gazebo onto the board, and it all works great.
